VIDEO: How to Operate a Boat Pump Out

Boat maintenance is an important part of owning a boat. One of the most crucial aspects of boat maintenance is pump outs. While it may seem intimidating, pumping out your boat is not as difficult as you may think.

In this video, Elizabeth from Seattle Boat Company will show you how to operate a boat pump out machine in just a few simple steps.

Step 1: Pull up with your boat

The first thing you need to do when operating a pump out machine is pull up with your boat at the designated area. At Seattle Boat Company's Lake Union facility, they have a fuel dock where you can access their pump out machine.

Step 2: Undo the fitting for your pump-out area

Once you're in position, undo the fitting for your pump-out area on your boat.

Step 3: Unravel the hose and turn on the machine

Next, unravel the hose from the machine and power it on.

Step 4: Put the area over the fitting on your boat

Take the fitting at the end of the hose and place it into your waste discharge hole. For this step, gloves may be preferred but are not required.

Step 5: Open valve and watch waste go through hose

When the end of the hose is fitted tightly into your waste discharge hole, open the valve and watch as waste goes through the hose through the clear section of the fitting. When it starts running clearer, first close the valve and then remove it from the waste discharge hole. Once the hose has been removed, you can screw your waste discharge cap back in.

Optional step: quick pump out clean

With the pump out machine still powered on and the valve open, dip the hose into the lake to run some fresh water through the machine to give it a quick clean.

Final step: Turn off machine and put it away

Once everything looks clear and clean, turn off your pump out machine and coil the hose back up. Your job is done!

Pumping out your boat might seem daunting at first but with these simple steps outlined by Elizabeth from Seattle Boat Company, it's easy! Keep up with regular maintenance like this to keep your boating experience safe and enjoyable.
