If you’ve been to a Mariners game, you’ve probably seen a certain life-vest wearing salmon known as Humpy race around the warning track. This week, Humpy finally won his big race, and since it’s officially Humpy Day, we couldn’t resist celebrating the win with a reminder that’s just as important on the water as it is on the field: Always have properly fitted life vests!
Life jackets save lives. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 87% of people who drowned in boating accidents last year weren’t wearing life jackets. Accidents can happen anytime, even on calm water or during a short cruise close to shore. The best way to stay safe is to wear your life jacket every time you’re on (or near) the water.
Just like Humpy’s bright orange vest, a properly fitted life jacket should be:
Snug but comfortable. It shouldn’t ride up over your chin or ears when you lift your arms.
Sized for you. Kids, teens, and adults all need the right size and weight rating.
Coast Guard–approved. Look for the label before you buy.
In good shape. Check buckles, straps, and seams before each use.
Worn correctly. Zip it up and buckle all straps, even when you’re anchored or docked.
Nearly 75% of fatal boating accident victims drowned, and the majority weren’t wearing life jackets.
Wearing a life jacket can cut your risk of drowning in half.
Most accidents happen on calm, sunny days, not during storms.
Children under 13 are required by law to wear life jackets on boats in Washington State.

Here’s an easy way to make sure your vest fits right:
Buckle and/or zip it all the way.
Raise your arms overhead and have someone gently tug on the shoulders.
If it rides up past your chin or ears, tighten it or try a smaller size.
Practice moving, sitting, and twisting. You’ll wear it more if it’s comfortable.
In honor of Humpy Day take a moment to inspect your gear, make sure everyone on board has a properly fitted vest, and lead by example. Whether you’re surfing, cruising, or fishing: Wear it. Every ride, every time.
Stay safe and have fun out there!🐟🦺
