100 More Days of Boating

Fall Wake Boating in Washington: Wakesurfing, Wakeboarding & More

Discover why fall is one of the best times for boating in Washington, from fewer crowds to cooler days and more time on the water.

Fall can be one of the best times for wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and enjoying a wake boat in Washington. With fewer boats on the water, quieter waterways, and plenty of beautiful fall days, there are still plenty of opportunities to get out on the water before winterization and storage.

I’ve been boating for more than 20 years, and my family regularly uses our surf boat well into October. Over the years, fall boating has become one of my favorite parts of the season. There’s something about having fewer boats around, cooler temperatures, and a little more breathing room on the water that makes those late-season outings feel special.

If you're wondering whether you can keep wakesurfing or wakeboarding in the fall, the answer is yes, as long as the weather and water conditions are safe and comfortable.

Here’s why I think fall is a great time to keep your wake boat on the water.

Can You Wakesurf or Wakeboard in the Fall?

Yes, you can wakesurf and wakeboard in the fall. The biggest consideration is the weather and water temperature, rather than the calendar.

Early fall in Washington can still bring surprisingly warm days, especially after the water has had months to warm up. While temperatures eventually start to drop, there can be plenty of comfortable days for getting behind the boat.

For me, the key is simply paying attention to the conditions. If it's a beautiful fall day and the water is comfortable, there's no reason I can't get another surf session in.

A Wetsuit Can Extend Your Watersports Season

If the water feels a little too cold for your usual setup, a wetsuit can make a big difference when wakesurfing or wakeboarding in the fall.

A wetsuit provides additional insulation and can make cooler-water sessions much more comfortable. As fall progresses and temperatures continue to drop, adding the right layers can help you stay on the water longer.

Why I Love Fall Boating in Washington

Fall boating feels completely different from the peak summer season, and that's part of what makes it so enjoyable!

1. There Are Fewer Boats on the Water

One of my favorite things about fall boating in Washington is the decrease in boat traffic.

Summer weekends can get busy, particularly on popular lakes. By fall, many people have returned to school, work, and their normal routines. That means fewer boats and often a more relaxed experience on the water.

For wakeboarding and wakesurfing, that extra space can be especially nice. You can spend more time enjoying your set and less time worrying about crowded waterways.

2. Fall Boating Has a Slower Pace

Summer boating can sometimes feel like you're trying to squeeze everything into one perfect sunny weekend.

Fall is different.

There's less pressure to pack the entire day with activities. You can head out for a few hours, get a couple of sets behind the boat, cruise around, and spend time with family and friends without feeling like you have to make the most of every minute.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy taking our surf boat out in September and October. The days feel a little slower, and the experience is more relaxed.

3. You Can Get More Out of Your Boat

If you own a wake boat, you probably didn't buy it just to use it for a few months each year.

Fall is a great opportunity to extend your boating season and get more use out of your boat before winterization.

Whether you're wakesurfing, wakeboarding, cruising, or simply spending an afternoon on the water, those extra outings can turn into some of your favorite boating memories.

Keep Your Wake Boat on the Water This Fall

The end of summer doesn't have to mean the end of boating.

With fewer boats, quieter waterways, and the chance to squeeze in a few more wakesurfing or wakeboarding sessions, fall can be one of the best times to enjoy a wake boat in Washington.

After more than 20 years of boating, I've found that some of my favorite days on the water aren't necessarily the hottest days of summer. Sometimes it's a crisp fall afternoon, a few good sets behind the boat, and time with family and friends that makes the season memorable.

So if you're looking at the calendar and wondering whether it's time to put your wake boat away, don't be too quick to call it quits. If the weather and water conditions are right, there may still be plenty of boating left to enjoy.
